2025 was one of the most difficult years for press freedom in the U.S. Journalists faced escalating harassment, censorship, legal threats, and violence — and Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF) was there to support them.

Below is a snapshot of what we accomplished in 2025. These numbers represent stronger newsrooms and a press freedom infrastructure that is fighting harder than ever to keep journalists safe.

Our work is nowhere near over, and the threat to press freedom is as present as ever. If you care about the photojournalist who was left bleeding, knees injured by a tear-gas canister, the reporter whose notes were searched at a political fundraiser, and the whistleblowers who risk everything to expose abuse, join us by supporting FPF today with a gift.

In 2025, there were:

  • 600,000+ visitors to FPF’s website.
  • 30,000 subscribers across five newsletters.
  • 3,201 journalists trained on digital security to protect themselves and their sources.
  • 870+ media mentions of FPF’s work, including in news reports, advocacy articles, research papers, and amicus briefs.
  • 255 press freedom violations documented in the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker.
  • 250+ FOIA requests filed to combat government secrecy.
  • 61 newsrooms receiving whistleblower tips through FPF’s SecureDrop system.
  • 18 events held to inform the public.
  • 6 Freedom of Information Act lawsuits filed to combat government secrecy.

This work is only possible because of supporters who believe in the essential role of a free and independent press. As we look toward 2026, the threats journalists face aren’t slowing down, and neither can we.

If you value a country where reporters can do their jobs without fear, consider making a year-end gift. Your support ensures we can train more journalists, thoroughly document violations, take on important legal battles, and strengthen the press freedom infrastructure democracy depends on.

Thank you for standing with us in 2025.
