The year 2025 marked one of the most dangerous periods for journalists in U.S. history. Our 2025 Impact Report shares a comprehensive look at how attacks on the press escalated and how Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF) supported journalists with tools, training, documentation, and advocacy.
Inside the report, you’ll see a snapshot of what press freedom violations looked like on the ground, including photojournalists struck by crowd-control munitions, members of the press arrested at protests, and a reporter’s notes searched by federal agents. You’ll read about the improvements we made to our journalist and whistleblower tools. You’ll learn more about how we’re using Freedom of Information Act lawsuits to fight government secrecy. And you’ll see our plans for the year ahead.
Trevor Timm, FPF’s executive director“This work is not abstract; we help real people, every day, who need a watchdog.”
We want you to read the report, to get a full picture of the work we did in 2025 and the work we plan to continue doing this year. But we also want you to consider donating an amount that is meaningful to you.
If you believe reporters should be able to document protests without being beaten. If you believe journalists should be able to protect their sources without surveillance. If you want the press to be able to hold power to account without fear of retaliation, now is the time to act. Support FPF today with a donation.
We are proud of the work we did in 2025, sobered by the need for it, and (with your support) prepared for the fight ahead.
