Dear Senator,

I urge you to vote against Danielle Thumann Severs’ confirmation to serve as a commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission.

Under Chair Brendan Carr, the FCC has flagrantly and repeatedly attacked press freedom, such as by threatening the licenses of broadcasters over news coverage the administration dislikes or by opening sham investigations into broadcasters and others.

Throughout these abuses, Thumann has served as a senior counsel to Carr. She has apparently been unable or unwilling to rein in Carr’s use of FCC authority to target the press, and there is nothing to indicate that she would vote against similar abuses as an FCC commissioner.

In addition, confirming Thumann would pave the way for Trump to fire FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez, who is currently the only commissioner to speak out against Carr’s misuse of FCC authority and to vote against it. Trump has not renominated Gomez, and her potential termination would leave the agency without any dissenting voices.

Please vote against Thumann’s confirmation and speak out against the FCC’s weaponization of its authority against the press.
