Dear Senator,

I urge you to oppose Jay Clayton’s confirmation to serve as director of national intelligence and to press him during his upcoming confirmation hearing about his outrageous subpoenas targeting New York Times journalists.

As U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, Clayton recently subpoenaed four Times reporters at the behest of the White House, seeking to force them to reveal their confidential sources, after they reported that the new Air Force One gifted to President Donald Trump by Qatar was deemed unsafe to fly the president.

Using grand jury subpoenas to target journalists because their reporting embarrassed the administration is a blatant attack on press freedom. Subpoenaing journalists to force them to reveal their sources chills whistleblowing and reporting in the public interest.

Clayton’s misuse of the grand jury process in this case demonstrates that he is willing to weaponize his official power against the press and is not fit to serve as DNI.

Please question Clayton about these subpoenas during his confirmation hearing and vote against his confirmation. Someone who attacks the free press has no business serving as DNI.
