Working with us

Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF) is a nonprofit organization protecting and defending journalism in the 21st century. We give journalists the tools to protect themselves and their sources, monitor aggressions against the press and advocate for a more informed electorate, all in defense of the First Amendment.

With no return-to-office mandate, one designated learning day per month, and incredible benefits, we’re also a great place to work. If you’re a lifelong learner who understands a free press is the bedrock of our democracy, we want to work with you.

FPF is a proud equal opportunity employer, and does not discriminate on the basis of an individual’s sex, age, race, color, creed, national origin, alienage, religion, marital status, pregnancy, sexual or reproductive health decisions, sexual orientation or affectional preference, gender identity and expression, disability, genetic trait or predisposition, carrier status, citizenship, veteran or military status, or other personal characteristics protected by law.

Frequently Asked Questions

I meet many — but not all — of the requirements for the role. Does it make sense to apply?

No candidate ever meets all of the qualifications, and we encourage you to apply if you’re excited about one of our roles. We warmly welcome members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including people of color, LGBTQ+ folks, and people with disabilities.

Will FPF consider international applicants?

While our full-time roles do not require U.S. citizenship, a candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. to be considered and must be based in the United States. FPF is unable to sponsor employees for work authorization at this time and any selected candidate for a full-time role will be required to submit proof of authorization. However, our RFPs for independent contractors are open to all.

I applied two weeks ago and have not heard back. When can I expect a response?

First and foremost, thank you for your interest in FPF and for taking the time to submit an application! Our hiring team will review your application and reach out for an interview request if we want to pursue your candidacy. (Note: Please check your spam folder in case it mistakenly screens our email.)

What is the average timeline for your hiring process?

Truthfully, it varies. FPF is committed to finding individuals who are not only equipped to perform the duties outlined in the job description but are also aligned with our mission and purpose. If you’re invited to an interview, we will keep you updated on the status of your candidacy in as close to real time as possible. We thank you in advance for your patience!

This job has been listed for a while. Is it still open?

Any role listed on our website is one for which we are still accepting and reviewing applications. We remove all inactive searches as soon as we secure candidates.

Can I volunteer to help?

FPF does not offer volunteer opportunities at this time. For early career professionals, our internship applications typically open in the spring, so please bookmark this page and check back regularly if that’s an opportunity you’re interested in.
