Cross-platform end-to-end encryption comes to Apple and Google messengers
A messaging app is a bit like a language. Everyone needs interoperable “rules” about the language to be able to communicate.
In the past, the primary standard used across all major platforms was traditional SMS text messages, first popularized in the 1990s and early 2000s. These messages don’t support a variety of modern features, such as sharing high-quality videos. Because Apple and Google did not offer cross-platform end-to-end encryption in their default messaging apps, users were left to have less secure conversations unless they intentionally used an encrypted messaging app like Signal.
Now Google and Apple are enabling end-to-end encryption that works across both Android and Apple devices, using Rich Communication Services, a more secure and feature-rich alternative to traditional SMS messages.
What you can do
- Download those updates. Android users with recent updates should already be able to use end-to-end encryption with RCS. If you use an iPhone, you need iOS 26.5 to get end-to-end encryption using RCS. Right now this is rolling out in iOS’s beta updates, so update as soon as you can.
- Check if your carrier is supported. This rollout, as of now, is only for supported wireless carriers, so check if you can take advantage.
- Confirm your messages are encrypted. On an iPhone, you can confirm your messages are secure if you see a banner that reads “Encrypted” at the top of a conversation. Android users should see a banner that reads, “This chat is now end-to-end encrypted.”
Updates from our team
- We’re hiring! At a moment when we are supporting record numbers of journalists, we are seeking an AppSheet consultant to help us move even more efficiently with our CRM and project management tools. To apply, submit a project proposal. Proposals will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and we may close the call early if we find a strong candidate before the deadline on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at 5 p.m. Eastern time.
- Register here for “Journalist safety in the US: Crowds, protests, and events,” on Tuesday, May 19, at 1 p.m. Eastern time. This event is brought to you by the U.S. Journalist Assistance Network and also features our own Harlo Holmes. We hope to see you there!
