Why support Freedom of the Press Foundation?

Our mission is to protect, defend, and empower public-interest journalism in the 21st century. We monitor and document virtually every press freedom violation in the United States. We build secure communications tools used by the world’s top investigative news organizations. We teach journalists how to keep themselves and their sources safe in the digital age. And we engage in public and legal advocacy to defend press freedom in the U.S. and around the world. (Read more here)

How do I become a member?

We consider all of our supporters to be full-fledged members of Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF). Giving any amount to support our work will grant you access to our trainings, resources, events, and expertise. When you become a sustaining donor or give a one-time donation over $100, you are eligible to opt in to a range of tiered gifts from our online store. Simply click “Please send me my free gifts from the membership program” when making your donation.

Why should I join the membership program?

Opting in to your membership is more than just a whistle and a T-shirt. By opting in to become a member of FPF, you get to hear directly from the experts who secure newsrooms across the U.S. and the globe. You’ll be able to equip yourself with the tools necessary to protect, defend, and empower free speech like never before. You can use your gifts from FPF as conversation starters about the importance of press freedom and investigative journalism. Most importantly, you’ll be signing up to sustain our work long term.

What else does becoming a member mean?

FPF’s membership program aims to activate you and make your support a two-way street. With your help over the years, we have been hard at work supporting newsrooms and equipping journalists with digital security tools. The need for free press advocates has never been greater, and we need your help to hold those in power accountable.

Additionally, we are excited to share our resources with you in a calendar of events throughout the year. You’ll find our events archive filled with helpful webinars, including:

  • Digital security 101 trainings; using security tools and evergreen best practices;
  • Anti-doxxing seminars; current threat modeling, how to minimize your digital footprint, and self-defense tools;
  • Annual keynote address and fireside chats with our board members on how the fight for First and Fourth Amendment rights is more important than ever in this increasingly digital world.
